PlayStation has announced that it has acquired Finnish studio Housemarque, thanks to the success of the latest game Returnal on the PS5.
The company announced the acquisition on June 29.
Housemarque is becoming the latest addition to PlayStation Studios.
It includes Ratchet & Clank developers Insomniac Games, Horizon Zero Dawn’s Guerilla, and Last of Us creator Naughty Dog.
“The recent release of Housemarque Returnal proves that the studio has an incredible vision and is able to create unforgettable new games that resonate in our society,” wrote Hermene Hulst, CEO of PlayStation Studios.

“This addition enhances PlayStation Studios’ creativity, and I can’t wait to see what Housemarque’s future will look like.”
To earn critical acclaim, Housemarque launched Returnal on PlayStation 5 on April 30th. The game is a third-person shooter where players must survive from a hostile alien planet while stuck in a time loop.
Housemarque’s partnership with PlayStation began in 2007 when the developer released Super Stardust HD on the PS3.
Other Housemarque games include Dead Nation and Outland. One of the oldest games was Supreme Snowboarding, which was released in 1999 on Microsoft Windows.
Ilari Kuittinen, co-founder and managing director of Housemarque, said the acquisition offered security for the development of future games.
“This gives our studio a clear future and a solid opportunity to continue to implement game-oriented approaches while experimenting with new narrative methods and pushing the boundaries of this modern art form,” said Kuittinen.
