If you are thinking of starting bird watching, it will immediately enhance your game. Their compact size, relatively lightweight, and ease of use are not to be underestimated – and it’s fantastic to keep your eyes on the target, sleeping and not resting your elbows. Worth the money.

And while the Fuji-stabilized Techno-Stabi 12 × 28 binoculars aren’t really all that expensive, just under $774 (R10,445) is a pretty big amount to claim a set of tanks with 28mm objective lenses. But if you pay attention, there’s the word “stabilized” that makes everything different. Yes, you can drop $ 110 to $ 222 for a decent set of 10 × 25 binoculars for bird watching, but that’s all you’ll use them for. They are too small to work at night and are too narrow to do anything that requires longer observation. If you have money for them, the Techno-Stabi 12×28 should be on your wild / bird watching/astronomy wish list.

Weird looking critter

The Fuji Techno-Stabi 12×28 is a bit strange, especially if you’re used to more traditional designs. It has a compact main body that is large enough to fit both hands comfortably, and the two 28mm lenses sit snugly together in front.The controls – focus and switch to turn on stabilization – are in a straight line along the top of the binoculars, but the eyepieces on moving stems look out of place. Each eyepiece has an adjustable eyepiece cover, each of which can lock at a pre-set height, and the right eyepiece also has an adjustable diopter setting – at least where you expect it. It looks like something from a Splinter Cell game or a James Bond movie – the kind of high-tech gadget you could use to save your life in the desert. Oh, we just used it to look at some birds, animals and stars. Okay, and maybe some people are far, far away (that’s how you should interact with other people nowadays).

Zooming in on it

Unlike many other technologies we play here with Stuff, Fuji binoculars are not too much. There is one switch, a battery port (which requires a lone CR2 battery), and a place to look at it. But anyone who has used binoculars and other optics will tell you that it’s all about how you look at it. They will replace at least a few months of experience, and if you’ve already gained experience … Well, you’re in for a good time.

eye and there is no evidence of chromatic aberration. But, like any set of 12x binoculars (anything over 10x, really), the view is darts and darts around, unless you support your elbows on a hard surface or really know what you’re doing standing upright. Until you turn the switch to the On position. The inner tips of the Techno-Stabi are connected to the perceptible “trunk”, and the view is smoothed, at most, very gently. If you are already fairly stable, you are gaining a solid view of your goal. And it can compensate a lot.

Best use cases

We used them in various scenarios, mainly to see birds visiting the garden or butterflies flying in the distance. It’s very easy to get lost in tracking goals because you don’t do as much compensation with your back and shoulders. This equates to longer, more comprehensive views.

But it was bright daylight. We also took these for a night drive to see the skies around Johannesburg (which is Bortle 7, unless large parts of the city have cargo). Generally, you do not want to use anything with a lens that is less than 42 mm in size, but 50 mm is preferred for astronomical purposes. A bigger goal equals more light collection, especially outside the city. But a stabilized image compensates a lot.

When stacked against a pair of 7 × 50 Celestron binoculars as well as a 10 × 25 pair of Nikon, Fuji loses a larger pair in terms of brightness. This is to be expected. But the Techno-Stabi 12×28 is surprisingly clear given its ability to collect light. Clear enough to select details for the crescent, as well as clear enough to feel the stellar field behind Orion’s belt. Better yet, it is possible to single out some Trapezoidal points inside the Orion Nebula (M42). You won’t get all four of them, but you should solve at least two and possibly three points. This is extremely impressive for binoculars of this size.

You might question whether it’s worth spending more than $ 737 on a set of acclaimed bird-watching binoculars. But then you haven’t held the Fuji 10×28 in your hands, bouncing from bird to bird, because you’ve forgotten that your eyes are still working normally. And you haven’t pointed to the sky to find some of the more beautiful astronomical targets (the sky is nice at this time of year) and wondered how little your forearms hurt. Stabilized binoculars may be considered cheating by some, but that’s fine. Sometimes you just want a great experience without any effort, and that’s exactly what Fuji binoculars Techno-Stabi 12 × 28 provide.
